Calling all young women
08Jul08
COME on girls, get off your butts and on to a footy oval. There's a new league starting for girls 13 to 17 and it only needs another eight players to join the Darebin Falcons youth girls team for it to get off the ground.
There are already two other teams in the budding north-west league waiting on the Falcons.
The club has until mid-July to field a team after the season start for the league was postponed because of the lack of numbers.
Matilda, 17, from Northcote, said she had been playing with the senior Darebin Falcons team but would prefer to play with girls her own age.
"I'm really disappointed that we haven't been able to get more people who want to play," Matilda said.
"A lot of girls have said they were interested but then haven't turned up."
Fellow footballer Niki, 17, from Regent, said she played with the seniors but some of the women were much bigger and stronger.
She said it was easier to relate to girls her own age.
"We're lucky to have the chance to play because a lot of girls in other areas don't get the opportunity."
AFL Victoria female football development manager Chyloe Kurdas said there was still time for a 10-week competition from the start of term three.
For more information phone Darebin Falcons youth girls coach Kathy Zacharopoulos on 0413 604 998 or turn up to training at the AH Capp Reserve, Halwyn Cres, West Preston, on Wednesdays from 5.30pm.
